چکیده

The microcracking process in laminates which have outer-ply 90◦ plies (e.g. [90m/0n]s) has some important differences from the microcracking process in laminates which lack outer-ply 90◦ plies (e.g. [0n/90m]s). Foremost among the differences is the characteristic damage state. [90m/0n]s laminates form antisymmetric or staggered microcracks while [0n/90m]s laminates form symmetric microcracks. To explain observed differences, this paper presents a variational mechanics analysis of the stresses and the energy release rate in a [90m/0n]s laminate having staggered microcracks. The new analysis and a previous analysis of [0m/90n]s laminates are used to assess the effect of laminate structure on the mechanical properties and failure properties of cross-ply laminates. The findings are: 1. A given level of microcracking damage causes a greater amount of degradation in mechanical properties in [90m/0n]s laminates than in the corresponding [0n/90m]s laminates. 2. Although [90m/0n]s laminates will initiate microcracks at lower loads, the corresponding [0n/90m]s laminates will develop more microcracks after continued loading. 3. A bending effect present in [90m/0n]s laminates but not in [0n/90m]s laminates promotes mode I delamination in [90m/0n]s laminates.

Fracture Mechanics Analysis of Composite Microcracking: Experimental Results in Fatigue

A recent variational mechanics analysis gives the energy release rate due to the formation of a new microcrack between two exisiting microcracks (John A. Nairn, J. Comp. Mat., 23, 1106 (1989)). This analysis has been useful in providing fracture mechanics interpretation of matrix microcracking in cross-ply laminates. This paper describes using the new energy relase rate analysis for a fracture ...

Finite Fracture Mechanics of Matrix Microcracking in Composites

The first form of damage in composite laminates is often matrix microcracks that are defined as intralaminar or ply cracks across the thickness of the ply and parallel to the fibers in that ply (see reviews in [1,2]). Tensile loading, fatigue loading, environment, and thermal cycling can all lead to microcrack formation. Microcracks can form in any ply that has a significant component of the ap...

Multiscale Analysis of Transverse Cracking in Cross-Ply Laminated Beams Using the Layerwise Theory

A finite element model based on the layerwise theory is developed for the analysis of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated beams. The numerical model is developed using the layerwise theory of Reddy, and the von Kármán type nonlinear strain field is adopted to accommodate the moderately large rotations of the beam. The finite element beam model is verified by comparing the present numeric...

Bending Analysis of Laminated Composite Plates with Arbitrary Boundary Conditions

It is well known that for laminated composite plates a Levy-type solution exists only for cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates. Numerous investigators have used the Levy method to solve the governing equations of various equivalent single-layer plate theories. It is the intension of the present study to introduce a method for analytical solutions of laminated composite plates with ar...

Propagation of Matrix Cracking and Induced Delaminatin in Cross-Ply Composite Beams Subjected to Bending Loads

Due to the mismatch of mechanical properties in composite laminates, propagation of delami-nation is considered as a severe damage mechanism in beams with various lay-up configurations. Delamination can be generated due to matrix cracking propagation or it can also be initiated due to the manufacturing process before using composite beams. Using a micromechanics model, this study is aimed to in...
